SwineFlu..4 cases..2 test positive in Manipal..

MANIPAL: Two more fresh swine flu patients were quarantined in Manipal on Monday. Two persons were quarantined on Sunday, taking the total number
of cases to four in this university town.

All the four have been admitted to the isolated wards at KMC, Manipal. Of the two positive cases confirmed on Sunday, one is an MIT third year engineering student, Subrmanaiam (21). He returned to Manipal, a fortnight ago, from London after a study
tour. The other is Tarun (23), a worker in food court from Kamakshipalaya in Bangalore. The other two suspected cases are also students from MIT.

Udupi DC Prasanna Kumar, district health officer (DHO) M R Naik and district surveillance officer (DSO) Dr Rohini confirmed the status of all these four cases at the press conference called by the top brasses of Manipal University and district officers on Monday.

Officials said adequate measures have been taken for treatment of the confirmed cases and also for testing arrangements at the Virology Lab at Manipal University. Quarantine wards with 10 beds each at Udupi District Hospital, Karkala and Kundapura taluk hospitals have benn set up.

For advanced treatment, if warranted, the patients will be transferred to Kasturba Hospital.

The hospital is well stocked with enough Tamiflu tablets and also masks and over 100 testing kits. Since Manipal University is a nationally authorized virology lab in the country as per the communique from the Union health ministry there is no necessity to have the tests done at NIV, Pune, officials said.

Prof H S Ballal, pro-chancellor and Raghuraman, medical superintendent, assured the public that there is no need to panic as the situation is under control and adequate measures have been taken to curb the pandemic.
Clinic open from 9 am to 6 pm

They said the special clinic will function from 9 am to 6 pm on all days at Annapoorna Mess at 9th Block MIT Campus. A special team will attend to the suspected cases. The faculty, students
and staff members of the university can avail this facility any number of times, even if they show symptoms of common cold.

For the public of Manipal, the OPD department has started a special clinic for suspected cases. Ballal said the virology lab has the facility to test10 throat swabs at a time and more facilities will be added if the situation warrants.

Ballal said because of the presence of large number of students here, including foreigners, the university has made special arrangements to screen all the suspects and also the public.
